Implicit Wiener Series

چکیده
The Wiener series is one of the standard methods to systematically characterize the nonlinearity of a neural system. The classical estimation method of the expansion coefficients via cross-correlation suffers from severe problems that prevent its application to high-dimensional and strongly nonlinear systems. We propose a new estimation method based on regression in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space that overcomes these problems. Numerical experiments show performance advantages in terms of convergence, interpretability and system sizes that can be handled.

Implicit Wiener Series Part II: Regularised Estimation
Classical Volterra and Wiener theory of nonlinear systems does not address the problem of noisy measurements in system identification. This issue is treated in the present part of the report. We first show how to incorporate the implicit estimation technique for Volterra and Wiener series described in Part I into the framework of regularised estimation without giving up the orthogonality proper...
متن کاملA Unifying View of Wiener and Volterra Theory and Polynomial Kernel Regression
Volterra and Wiener series are perhaps the best-understood nonlinear system representations in signal processing. Although both approaches have enjoyed a certain popularity in the past, their application has been limited to rather low-dimensional and weakly nonlinear systems due to the exponential growth of the number of terms that have to be estimated. We show that Volterra and Wiener series c...

متن کاملSeries expansion of Wiener integrals via block pulse functions
In this paper, a suitable numerical method based on block pulse functions is introduced to approximate the Wiener integrals which the exact solution of them is not exist or it may be so hard to find their exact solutions. Furthermore, the error analysis of this method is given. Some numerical examples are provided which show that the approximation method has a good degree of accuracy. The main ...
متن کاملImplicit Wiener Series for Higher-Order Image Analysis
The computation of classical higher-order statistics such as higher-order moments or spectra is difficult for images due to the huge number of terms to be estimated and interpreted. We propose an alternative approach in which multiplicative pixel interactions are described by a series of Wiener functionals. Since the functionals are estimated implicitly via polynomial kernels, the combinatorial...
